What is Therapeutic Massage?

Massage is the scientific art of assessment and manual application of certain techniques to soft tissue of skin, muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia. It is an effective and often used treatment for both acute injury and repetitive strain issues.

The primary benefits of massage therapy include increased circulation and decreased muscular tension. Increased circulation to damaged tissue helps to reduce swelling and promote faster healing through increased delivery of nutrition to the cells and increased removal of cellular debris. Decreasing tension in muscles and fascia can reduce adhesions and scar tissue that can form as a result of sprains and strains. This decreased tension can also be effective in the relief of acute muscular spasm.

Cancer:  Sarah Lehbauer

Chances are you know someone or are someone who is battling cancer now or has in the past few years. The shock of getting this diagnosis is overwhelming both on a physical level and on an emotional level. It is a life altering word that has reverberations throughout your being. You are inundated with new information about treatment options and side effects. Likely, you will be doing more reading and gaining more knowledge on the topic than you ever thought you would. Caring for someone going through this can also be stressful and making sure you don’t get “caregiver burnout”is crucial both for you and your loved one.

Massage Therapy can come alongside a person with cancer not to cure the cancer, but to improve the quality of life while battling it. Studies have shown that massage therapy is beneficial for decreasing stress and anxiety and reducing the nausea that often goes along with chemotherapy.  Modifications in massage are made depending on the type of cancer, the stage, and the current treatments being done. Talk to your doctor about whether Massage Therapy may acceptable for you during this time.

Once you have gone through the stage of actively fighting through cancer, you may be left with changes to your body. Sometimes it’s a scar from surgery that has left you with restricted movement and pain through a joint. Sometimes it’s swelling from removed lymph nodes or reduced circulation. And other times it’s simply becoming reacquainted with your body and feeling comfortable in your own skin. You may find  massage therapy beneficial in helping you in this stage.  It can mobilize scar tissue, reduce swelling and help you connect with your body in a positive way.

For those of you who are taking care of a loved one going through a cancer battle and are balancing their emotions as well as your own, don’t forget to take some time to unwind and reduce your own stress so you are better able to handle the ups and downs. Make sure you also have a support network of people who can help listen and share the responsibilities.

This chapter in your life is a fight.  Having a group of people supporting you and working together for your benefit is to your advantage. Talk with your doctor to see whether massage therapy can join your health care team to aid in your battle against cancer.
